Why the WaveKraft Padded Mailer Outperforms Other Mailers | TemperPack

How independent lab testing, competitive drop-test data, and proprietary paper architecture combine to close the gap between the efficiency of recyclable padded mailers and box-level product protection.

For decades, e-commerce shippers with high-volume fulfillment have faced a frustrating tradeoff: use a mailer and accept a higher risk of damage, or use a box and accept the added cost, weight, and dimensional-weight penalties that come with it. The curbside recyclable WaveKraft® Padded Mailer was engineered to eliminate that tradeoff entirely. It is a paper-based protective mailer built to be a small-box replacement that provides the same protection with mailer-level efficiency. Our independent lab testing supports that claim.

Independent, Third-Party Verified Testing

Keystone Package Testing, an ANAB-accredited (AT-3142) ISTA-member laboratory, independently tested our newest innovation, the WaveKraft Padded Mailer, against the ISTA 6 Amazon Overbox protocol. This is the same standard used to evaluate whether packaging can survive the rigors of real-world e-commerce fulfillment, including parcel sortation, conveyor transfer, and last-mile handling.

The shock-absorbing mailer testing covered three distinct product categories, each subjected to 18 drops across edges, corners, and faces at heights ranging from 18 to 36 inches, plus multi-face vibration sequences:

  • Consumer Electronics:  A 10-inch Android tablet remained fully intact and fully functional, with no damage to the display screen or camera.
  • Beauty and Cosmetics: A 40-color eyeshadow palette remained fully intact, with no product damage.
  • PET Bottles: A 22-fluid-ounce shampoo bottle with a flip-top cap remained leak-free, with no product damage detected.

All three tests, conducted on 2/27/2026 and documented under job numbers 2602-136S-1 through -3, returned a PASS result. That's a meaningful distinction. Our mailer passes testing against the ISTA® 6 Amazon Overbox protocol. This is a claim, few, if any, recyclable padded mailers on the market can make with third-party documentation to support it.

Head-to-Head Against the Competition

Beyond third-party certification, we ran extensive accelerometer-based drop testing. A total of 96 separate drop events were recorded across six mailer types and multiple payload categories. During these trials, we compared our mailer directly against the three products most used for e-commerce product protection today. Those competing products were the Plastic Bubble Mailer, the Glue Dot Mailer, and the Macerated Paper Mailer.

A side-by-side of bubble mailer, macerated paper mailer, and a glue dots mailer

vs. Plastic Bubble Mailer

The WaveKraft Padded Mailer delivers up to 45% better shock absorption than the Plastic Bubble Mailer, with the gap widening to roughly 46% on cosmetics payloads and 34% on glass payloads. In lab testing, the Plastic Bubble Mailer recorded product failures including lid damage and leakage in every category tested. Our mailer recorded zero product damage across all samples.

vs. Glue Dot Mailer

Against mailers using puffed glue dots  for cushioning, the WaveKraft Padded Mailer transmitted roughly 40% fewer Gs on cosmetics payloads and 31% fewer Gs on acrylic payloads. Glue Dot cushioning creates inconsistent protection from mailer to mailer and complicates recyclability. Our mailer uses no glue dots and no mixed materials. It’s paper on the outside, paper on the inside, and rated “Widely Recyclable” by How2Recycle.

vs. Macerated Paper

Both the WaveKraft Padded Mailer and Macerated Paper mailer are paper-based, but the engineering underneath is not comparable. Macerated Paper's unstructured pulp fill failed to protect every payload category tested, while our mailer’s proprietary rigid wave structure recorded zero failures across the board. This is a gap reflected in the roughly 33% fewer Gs transmitted on acrylic payloads.

Why There's Nothing Else Like It on the Market

Competing products can't close this gap because of structural engineering. Built on a proprietary structure, the WaveKraft Padded Mailer features columnar paper that provides rigid support. Its radial geometry absorbs and redistributes impact energy in every direction instead of transmitting shocks straight through to the product. This structure makes our mailer a strong candidate for small box replacement or an alternative to poly bubble mailers.

The proprietary WaveKraft Padded Mailer structure.

Unlike rigid corrugated boxes or flat pulp, the flexible gusseted mailer wraps irregular shapes and corners like foam while remaining paper-based and curbside recyclable. Among the products tested, it is the only mailer to combine a protective paper architecture with curbside recyclability and third-party verified e-commerce packaging performance. It’s a durable mailer that ensures product protection with today’s demanding e-commerce environment in harsh conditions.

The sustainability profile reinforces the case. The WaveKraft Padded Mailer carries a How2Recycle® “Widely Recyclable” rating, is made with over 25% recycled paper content, and is sourced from SFI-certified mills. It features engineered paper cushioning with no plastic bubbles and no glue dots paper-based with no plastic bubbles and no glue dots. This mailer can move straight into the curbside recycling bin instead of a specialty drop-off program. TemperPack is proud to be a Certified B Corporation, which means we meet independently verified standards for environmental and social performance, not just for products such as the WaveKraft Padded Mailer.

Proven in Live Fulfillment Operations

Lab results are only half the story. We partner with customers to support their internal testing and sustainability goals.

One leading beauty retailer needed two things: a switch to a water-based tape for our mailer and a live trial across its fulfillment network. We updated the tape, then supplied 12,000 mailers to validate their performance as a replacement for the plastic bubble mailers used to ship cosmetics and beauty products.

The objectives were clear: reduce shipping-damage returns while meeting internal sustainability requirements. The trial confirmed that the mailer delivered the required cushioning and performed seamlessly on existing fulfillment lines. Its gusseted design also fit more product than the packaging it replaced.

That's the difference of working with TemperPack. We don't just provide packaging. We partner with customers to develop solutions that meet their operational, performance, and sustainability goals.

There are three sizes for every product type:

The Bottom Line

For years, shippers of fragile, high-value, or damage-prone products you’ve had to choose between the protection of a box and the efficiency of a mailer. Our mailer closes that gap. It's backed by ISTA® 6 Amazon Overbox testing. It's backed by extensive competitive drop-test data against the Plastic Bubble Mailer, Glue Dot Mailer, and Macerated Paper Mailer. And it's built from a proprietary paper architecture that no competing product currently replicates. The low-profile, gusseted mailer also drives DIM weight reduction versus traditional boxes. That translates directly into freight savings for you and your 3PL fulfillment partners, if you’re shipping at scale. It is a curbside recyclable mailer engineered to protect what's inside. You don't have to compromise on cost or performance to get it.

Do you have products you’d like to switch out of a box and into a mailer? Contact us for your own sample trial and see how you can stop shipping air and excess dunnage, and start reducing DIM weigh while protecting your products.
